Removal of nitrate from underground mine waters using selective ion exchange resins

The removal of nitrogen from wastewaters is great importance due to the harmful effects in environment. In this study, nitrate two underground mine waters was investigated by strong anion exchange resins (Lewatit MonoPlus SR 7 (referred as SR7, macroporous), Purolite A520E (A520E, A300E (A300E, gel)) continuous-flow columns. Both had similar concentrations (NO3-N: Mine A 32 mg/l and B 37 mg/l) but contained different levels chlorides sulphates. Overall, all three removed real effectively. both waters, earliest breakthrough registered for resin while SR7 points. Chloride identified a more competitive ion than sulphate with A520E, their curves shifted left right when water changed (higher concentration Cl-) SO42-). Resin showed somewhat higher uptake other resins, which indicates its lower selectivity. This study provides new insight into how selectively polystyrene trialkyl functional groups porosity.
